About this book

An American writer named Carrie McClelland travels to Scotland to write a novel about the Jacobite Rebellion and Slains Castle. As she begins her research and writing, she discovers that her fictional account aligns with real historical events, particularly the spring of 1708 when a Jacobite fleet nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland. The novel alternates between two timelines. In 1708, young Sophia Paterson finds herself at Slains Castle during this dangerous period of Scottish history. In the present day, Carrie's writing begins to reveal what she believes may be ancestral memories or connections to these events. As her novel takes shape, Carrie realizes her story contains truths about a significant historical betrayal that few others may know. The Winter Sea weaves together Scotland's past and Carrie's present through interconnected narratives of love, danger, and time across centuries.
