Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate literary fiction that plays with philosophy and identity, where plot matters less than the texture of a character's inner life.
  • You're drawn to historical settings that feel alive and complicated, not just backdrop—where politics seeps into every street corner.
  • You enjoy writers who trust you to sit with ambiguity and won't explain everything, especially if you've read Saramago before or loved similar European modernists.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward narratives with clear resolutions and characters who know what they want.
  • You're looking for a page-turner or a plot-driven story where things happen at pace.
  • You find experimental narrative structures frustrating, or you're not in the mood for a book that requires your full attention on every page.

About this book

Set in 1936 Portugal, this novel follows Dr. Ricardo Reis, who returns to Lisbon after years in Brazil upon learning of the death of poet Fernando Pessoa. As dictator António de Oliveira Salazar consolidates power and the country moves toward civil war, Reis abandons his medical practice to write poetry and spend his days wandering the city's streets and boulevards. He pursues relationships with two women while being shadowed by Pessoa's ghost throughout his travels. As fascist revolution unfolds around him, Reis's life intersects with three strangers—two living and one dead. Through these encounters, he confronts questions about the nature of his own existence. The novel explores human relationships and dreams against a backdrop of political upheaval. Translated by Giovanni Pontiero, this work is a PEN Award winner.
