Perfect for you if...

  • You love comedians who are brutally honest about their lives and aren't afraid to call out hypocrisy, whether it's their own or their parents'.
  • You've felt like an outsider or misfit and want to read about someone who turned that into her superpower.
  • You're looking for a memoir that's genuinely funny without being self-flagellating or trying too hard to make trauma cute.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a traditional immigration narrative with straightforward chronology and sentiment, because Zarna jumps around and prioritises humour over linear storytelling.
  • You're uncomfortable with frank discussion of religion, family rejection, sexuality, or cultural conflict.
  • You prefer memoirs that position the author as purely sympathetic throughout, rather than someone who made mistakes and owned them.

About this book

Award-winning comedian Zarna Garg recounts her life story in this memoir. Growing up in India, she was called "so American" for reading newspapers, thinking deeply, and speaking freely. When her father attempted to arrange her marriage at age fourteen, she fled to the streets of Mumbai and eventually to Akron, Ohio, where she could pursue her own path. Garg held various roles throughout her life—dog-bite lawyer, stay-at-home mother, Indian matchmaker, and prizewinning screenwriter—before discovering stand-up comedy through a dare at an open mic night. She describes comedy as her spiritual home and notes that after surviving the streets of Mumbai, the stand-up world presented no greater challenge. The memoir chronicles Garg's journey of self-determination and reinvention, emphasizing that it is never too late to pursue your own destiny.
