About this book

This account examines McClellan's 1862 campaign on the Virginia Peninsula, a major Civil War operation involving 250,000 men, most of whom had never seen battle before. One in four soldiers was killed, wounded, or missing by the campaign's end. McClellan devised a plan to march up the Peninsula and capture Richmond, the Confederate capital. For three months he advanced toward the city, but when Robert E. Lee assumed command of Confederate forces, the situation shifted. In seven days, Lee forced the cautious McClellan to withdraw, altering the war's trajectory. Stephen W. Sears provides a detailed military history of this pivotal campaign and its key commanders.
