Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by royal history and want to know what actually happened behind palace doors, beyond the sanitised versions.
  • You enjoy multi-generational family sagas where the personal stakes matter as much as the historical ones.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer action-driven narratives over the slow, intricate dynamics of family relationships and court politics.

About this book

Victoria's Daughters tells the story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's five daughters: Vicky, Alice, Helena, Louise, and Beatrice. Born to a sovereign who ruled over a quarter of the earth's people, these sisters shared an extraordinary and privileged bond. Two of them would produce children of significant historical importance. Despite their elevated status, all five faced the social restrictions and family pressures common to nineteenth-century women. They were dominated by their mother, married largely for political advantage, and excluded from power when their brother Bertie became king. Researched across the palaces and houses where the princesses lived—in London, Scotland, Berlin, Darmstadt, and Ottawa—this book examines their complex lives within Europe's most influential dynasty. Packard explores the princesses' individual experiences, their talents in music and art, their work patronizing schools and hospitals, and their advocacy for women's education and employment. The narrative emphasizes family relationships and personal histories alongside historical events.
