Hastings frames the conflict primarily as a tragedy for the Vietnamese people, of whom forty died for every American. The narrative addresses atrocities committed by both sides—US blunders and actions matched by communist violence including executions and murders. The book examines the political and military dimensions of the entire conflict alongside personal testimonies, drawing from warlords and peasants, statesmen and soldiers.
