About this book

South Africa, 1820. Ann Waite discovers a battered longboat washed ashore in Algoa Bay containing two survivors: a scarred sailor and a young boy named Harry. When the man leaves alone, Ann raises Harry as her own. After two years of hardship in the African interior, Ann and Harry encounter the mysterious shipwrecked man again. He is Ralph Courtney, recently escaped from Robben Island, who seeks his fortune in Nativity Bay, a hidden harbour his father described to him in childhood. Ralph, Ann, and their fellow settlers soon discover that Nativity Bay borders a powerful kingdom ruled by the warrior king Shaka. Trapped with no way back to Algoa Bay, Ralph enters into a bargain with the Zulu king that forces him to confront his past. Book 7 in the Birds of Prey sequence of the Courtney series.
