Perfect for you if...

  • You want historical fiction that's emotionally grounded in real family bonds rather than sprawling war narratives.
  • You're drawn to stories about ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances and finding ways to persevere.
  • You appreciate novels inspired by true stories that honour the resilience of specific families, not abstractions of suffering.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your WWII fiction focused on military strategy or espionage rather than personal survival and family relationships.
  • You struggle with books containing detailed depictions of ghetto conditions, starvation, and the machinery of genocide.
  • You want plot-driven thrillers rather than character-driven narratives that move between multiple perspectives and timelines.

About this book

Inspired by the true story of a Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, this novel follows the Kurc family's determination to survive and reunite. In spring 1939, three generations of the Kurcs live in Radom, Poland, attempting to maintain normal life as the shadow of war approaches. As the horrors of the war become inescapable, family members are scattered across the world, each seeking their own path to safety. One sibling is forced into exile while another attempts to flee Europe. Others struggle to escape death by working in ghetto factories or hiding as gentiles. Driven by the will to survive and fear of permanent separation, the Kurcs rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere through the twentieth century's darkest period.
