What Happened Next: A Novel

Charlie Kilgore was a young child when his father stabbed a man to death on a lake twenty-five years ago, critically wounding Charlie's mother before disappearing. Now an adult, Charlie believes the official account of these events is incomplete and returns to his hometown in New Hampshire's White Mountains to investigate. Using fragments of the story he has gathered as the basis for a true crime podcast, Charlie begins interviewing old friends, family members, authorities, and others affected by the crime. Most have moved on and resist reopening old wounds. Charlie seeks to understand what could have driven his father to commit such violence and what truly happened that day. As Charlie's questions intensify, he discovers that uncovering the truth becomes dangerous. The past, it turns out, is far from settled in this family and on this lake.
