Perfect for you if...

  • You love WWII stories that focus on individual heroism rather than battles, especially ones with the grit and dark humour of soldiers under pressure.
  • You appreciate escape narratives where luck, cunning, and sheer stubborn optimism matter as much as military training.
  • You want a brisk, page-turning memoir that reads like a thriller but happened to a real person.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer sweeping military histories with maps and strategic context; this is intimate and personal, not panoramic.
  • You're looking for a polished modern memoir with psychological depth; Davies writes with the direct, matter-of-fact style of someone from his era.
  • You need long books; at 126 pages this is concentrated storytelling, not an epic.

About this book

In September 1943, Italy surrendered to advancing Allied forces, leaving thousands of Allied prisoners of war stranded in camps throughout the country. Tony Davies, captured in North Africa, was among them. Seizing the opportunity, Davies and two fellow prisoners embarked on a 700-mile journey on foot through German-occupied Italy, equipped only with determination and basic supplies. First published in 1973, this account chronicles their trek from the River Po to Calabria. Along the way, they encountered numerous Italian civilians who, relieved to no longer be fighting the British, welcomed them with street parties and hospitality. Despite constant danger of recapture and repeated German pursuit, Davies and his companions maintained their composure and humor throughout their ordeal. The narrative builds toward a dramatic conclusion as the tension escalates. The account is considered a classic escape story from the Second World War.
