Where Coyotes Howl

Set in 1916, Where Coyotes Howl follows Ellen Webster, a teacher who accepts a position in the small Wyoming town of Wallace. Within a year, she falls in love with both the High Plains landscape and Charlie Bacon, a local cowboy. Life on the prairie is harsh, with brutal winters and relentless summers. Ellen and Charlie build their relationship through shared triumphs and tragedies as Ellen settles into life as a rancher's wife. She finds purpose in her work and in her connections with other women on the prairie, many of whom face difficult circumstances—some lack loving partners, some came to Wallace unwillingly, and some cannot survive the unforgiving seasons. The women support one another, sharing secrets and helping during times of hardship. With Cheyenne, the nearest significant city, miles away, rural Wallace remains isolated and frontier-like. Ultimately, it is Ellen and Charlie's enduring love for each other that makes their story remarkable amid the constant trials of their environment.
