About this book

Carmelo Anthony's memoir recounts his childhood in the housing projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn and West Baltimore's Murphy Homes. Growing up in this environment, Anthony's world was initially limited to watching street life from his family's first-floor apartment. He faced significant dangers, navigated an education system that often ignored or exploited him, and experienced the deaths of loved ones. Despite these obstacles—including violence, poverty, and racism—Anthony was sustained by family support and mentorship from figures in his community and in basketball. He overcame these circumstances to eventually reach the NBA Draft at Madison Square Garden in 2003, beginning a professional basketball career. The memoir explores how a child who had his hopes and dreams diminished by his surroundings managed to survive and ultimately thrive, contrasting the realities of street life with the possibility of athletic achievement.
