Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to characters who retreat into their own minds and want to understand the loneliness that drives them.
  • You appreciate psychological fiction where the real drama happens in someone's interior life, not their plot.
  • You've read Dostoevsky's major novels and want to see these same obsessions distilled into shorter, shattering form.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need plot momentum and clear narrative arcs; these stories move at the speed of introspection.
  • You prefer contemporary settings and straightforward prose; the 19th-century Russian sensibility won't speak to you.
  • You're looking for comfort or uplift; Dostoevsky diagnoses spiritual sickness here, he doesn't cure it.

About this book

This volume contains stories in which Dostoyevsky examines the figure of the dreamer disconnected from reality and explores his complex relationship with utopianism—themes that recur throughout his major novels. In White Nights, the dreamer's romantic fantasies appear idyllic on the surface but conceal deep loneliness and separation from actual living. Though he forms a sentimental friendship with Nastenka, his eventual retreat into imagination foreshadows the withdrawal into the 'underground' that characterizes many of Dostoyevsky's later intellectual protagonists. A Gentle Creature and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man demonstrate how such detachment from reality can lead to spiritual emptiness and moral indifference. According to Dostoyevsky's vision, the tragedy of the isolated individual can only be resolved through rediscovering compassion and responsibility toward others. This translation preserves the power and lyricism of Dostoyevsky's prose, while the introduction contextualizes the stories in relation to each other and to his novels.
