Perfect for you if...

  • You're a leader or aspiring mentor who wants practical frameworks for building relationships that actually matter, not just generic advice about networking.
  • You're drawn to stories of real people succeeding because someone believed in them first, and you want to understand how that happens.
  • You're looking to give back but unsure how to mentor effectively, and you want to learn from people who've done it at the highest levels.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a deep dive into psychological research on mentorship—this is stories and principles, not academic analysis.
  • You prefer fiction or narrative-driven books; this is structured interviews and guideposts designed for practical application.
  • You're sceptical of books by public figures or celebrity endorsement cultures; this heavily features high-profile names and their testimonials.

About this book

During the pandemic, Dina Powell McCormick and David McCormick observed that many Americans, including their six teenage daughters, felt disconnected and lacked access to mentorship and guidance. In response, they interviewed successful leaders about the mentors who shaped their lives and helped them discover their purpose. The book features accounts from influential figures including Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft), Tory Burch (founder of a women's fashion company), producer Brian Grazer, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Each shares how their mentors influenced their trajectories. The authors identify four critical elements of transformative mentorship: mutual trust, shared values, meaningful commitment, and instilling confidence. The book provides guideposts and examples from actual mentorship relationships. The McCormicks are launching a movement to encourage leaders to share their own mentorship stories and the guidance they offer their mentees.
