Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate literary fiction that doubles as political act, where personal stories become statements about freedom and constraint.
  • You're drawn to feminist literature that doesn't lecture, using fable and allegory to explore what women want when they're not performing for others.
  • You value authors who've paid real costs for their words and want to read work that earned its power through lived consequence.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear resolutions; this is dreamlike and symbolic, moving more through mood and meaning than conventional story beats.
  • You want escapist fiction set far from politics; the novel is inseparable from its Iranian context and the author's imprisonment.
  • You're looking for contemporary romance or domestic realism; this is a mystical allegory that operates more like parable than naturalistic novel.

About this book

Women Without Men follows five women—a wealthy middle-aged housewife, a prostitute, and a schoolteacher among them—whose different paths lead them to live together in an abundant garden on the outskirts of Tehran. Drawing on Islamic mysticism and recent Iranian history, the novel depicts these women escaping the constraints of family and society, imagining a future without men. The work functions as an allegory of contemporary Iran, employing fable-like and polemical techniques to address traditional Persian gender relations and women's sexuality. Shortly after its 1989 publication, author Shahrnush Parsipur was arrested and jailed for the novel's frank portrayal. Banned in Iran, it became a national bestseller and was translated into several languages, introducing readers to Parsipur's witty and subversive writing.
