About this book

The third book in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series continues the story of Heywood Floyd, who has survived two previous encounters with mysterious monoliths and the alien intelligences behind them. Floyd is selected as a celebrity guest aboard the privately-owned spaceship Universe to witness the first manned landing on Halley's Comet. When scientists discover a diamond the size of a mountain on Jupiter's moon Europa—a fragment of Jupiter's core—circumstances change. The spaceship Galaxy is hijacked and forced to crash into Europa's ocean. The Universe is diverted from its original mission to attempt a rescue of Galaxy's crew. Floyd must once again confront HAL, David Bowman, and the monolith-building alien race, which pursues its own agenda regarding humanity's future.
