The story unfolds across two timelines. In 1982, Dawn is a young mother adjusting to married life when she meets Hazel, forming a connection that complicates her world. She faces conflicting desires between this relationship and her existing responsibilities, including her daughter. In 2022, Heron, an older man living a quiet life, receives difficult news from his doctor that upends everything. He struggles with how to tell Maggie, his only child and the center of his life, about his diagnosis—and about other secrets he has kept from her for years. The novel explores themes of love and loss, intimacy and injustice, custody and care, and examines whether healing from past wounds is possible in a changed world.
