About this book

A Girl Called Samson follows Deborah Samson, born in 1760 to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts. After her father abandons the family and her mother cannot support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant, fueling her desire for liberation and adventure. Twenty years later, as the American colonies fight for independence, Deborah disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental army. Her height and lanky build allow her to pass convincingly, and she soon experiences the realities of warfare firsthand.
