A Tale of Jerusalem

Set in ancient Jerusalem, this story follows three priests—Abel-Fitim, Buzi-Ben-Levi, and Simeão, the Gizbarim—as they rush to the city's walls during a time of impending Roman threat. While debating the generosity and inconsistency of pagans, they reaffirm their faith against their enemies' greed and work to secure a sacred offering from a temple in Pompeii. The narrative uses satirical dialogue and mystical references to examine tensions between the sacred and the profane. The story reaches a turning point when an unexpected animal appears and disrupts the ritual, symbolizing the breakdown of established traditions and the weakness of deeply held beliefs.
