Abandoned in Hell: The Fight For Vietnam's Firebase Kate

In October 1969, William Albracht, the youngest Green Beret captain in Vietnam, assumed command of Firebase Kate, a remote hilltop outpost staffed by 27 American soldiers and 156 Montagnard militiamen. The following dawn, three North Vietnamese Army regiments—approximately six thousand troops—crossed the Cambodian border and launched an attack. Facing odds of three dozen to one, Albracht's forces repelled the initial assault. After five days of fighting, however, the defenders ran out of ammunition and water. Rather than surrender or perish, Albracht led his troops off the hill in a night march through enemy lines. This memoir documents the leadership, sacrifice, and violence of the battle, offering an account of battlefield courage during the Vietnam War. The book includes a foreword by Joseph L. Galloway, coauthor of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young, and contains photographs.
