About this book

Alvin is the last child born in Diaspar, a ten-billion-year-old city on a far future world. Curious about the world beyond the city, he discovers that the oldest histories claim no outside world exists—it was destroyed by the Invaders millions of years ago. Alvin finds a rock bearing an inscription addressed to him: "There is a better way. Give my greetings to the Keeper of the Records. Alaine of Lyndar." This mysterious message sets him on a quest to uncover humanity's true past and future. Originally published in the November 1948 issue of Startling Stories, this novel presents Clarke's vision of a distant future.
