Gabriel Thompson and the narrator come from rival New York families that control two of the nation's largest companies. Their families' business rivalry spans decades, and they have carried on the conflict since childhood. After a conference in Vegas, they encounter each other, have drinks, and Gabriel dares the narrator to do something. They wake the next morning married and hungover. To protect their reputations, they must convince the media and their families that the marriage is real by attending parties, living together, and appearing in love.
