About this book

Set in the Province of Carolina in 1710, this novel reimagines the vampire origin story during early American slavery, blending alternate history with supernatural horror. Willie and his beloved Gertie live enslaved on the brutal plantation of James "Big Jim" Barrow, with little hope of escape. Their circumstances change when Rafazi, an enigmatic slave, offers Willie a dark path to liberation. Rafazi is the last surviving member of the Ramanga, an ancient African vampire tribe from the Kingdom of Ghana nearly destroyed by plague. Having roamed the world for centuries, Rafazi seeks to replenish his heritage's power by turning Willie and leading a revolt of the enslaved. Willie sees this as the only way to free his people from bondage, but Gertie fears the vampiric legacy Rafazi carries will bring only destruction. As an army of blood slaves gathers to seek revenge against their oppressors, Willie faces an irreversible choice between the reemergence of the Ramanga and the justified slaughter of those who enslaved them. The novel explores themes of freedom, power, and the costs of liberation through violence.
