Perfect for you if...

  • You loved Just Kids and want more of Patti Smith's lyrical, unflinching reflection on creativity and loss.
  • You're drawn to memoirs that blur the line between poetry and prose, where everyday moments become sacred.
  • You care about how artists survive heartbreak and rebuild themselves through their work.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward, chronological life stories without philosophical digression.
  • You're looking for rock and roll excess and fame drama rather than intimate domestic life.
  • You want a fast-paced narrative and aren't patient with dreamlike, impressionistic writing.

About this book

Patti Smith's memoir traces her life from a post–World War II childhood in a condemned housing complex through her emergence as an artist and writer. As a child, she navigates her imagination, leads her siblings, and searches for meaning in her surroundings. During her teenage years, she discovers poetry and music, drawing inspiration from Arthur Rimbaud and Bob Dylan. She eventually writes lyrics that become part of iconic recordings including Horses, Wave, and Easter. Smith marries Fred Sonic Smith and builds a life with him in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, where she establishes a dedicated writing space. The couple explores their shared interests while raising a family. The memoir addresses significant losses and the grief that follows, alongside her continued devotion to writing and artistic creation. Smith describes how she rebuilds her life through caring for her children and returning to writing—the constant practice that transforms her experiences into art. The account concludes with Smith traveling and writing, driven by imagination and the pursuit of artistic freedom.
