Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in how diaspora communities maintain identity across borders and generations, particularly through Jewish history and culture.
  • You appreciate scholarship that blends personal narrative with rigorous historical research rather than keeping them separate.
  • You want to understand the diversity within Judaism beyond the Ashkenazi-centric narratives that dominate English-language books.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a straight memoir or personal essay; this is structured as academic research even though it includes the author's own experiences.
  • You prefer narrative-driven books without theoretical frameworks or historical context layered throughout.
  • You're seeking an introduction to Judaism or Jewish history at the broadest level rather than a focused study of one specific community.

About this book

This volume combines ethnography, history, and memoir to document the complex past and present of the Bukharan Jewish community, an ancient Mizrahi group. Though deeply rooted in Central Asia, Bukharan Jews have maintained significant ties to the broader Jewish world. Following the community's dispersal after the Soviet Union's collapse, Cooper conducted ethnographic research in Uzbekistan to record Jewish life there, as well as among immigrants to the US and Israel. Drawing on this fieldwork and historical research about encounters between Bukharan Jews and Jewish communities elsewhere, Cooper presents an intimate account of Bukharan Jewish identity. The narrative explores the tensions involved in sustaining Judaism as a unified global religion across its long and diverse diaspora history.
