Ten years ago, Joan Mason escaped a fire set by classmate Elijah Weston while she was an undergrad in Missoula, Montana. She fled the town and became a homicide detective in Philadelphia. When Weston is released from prison and returns to Missoula, Joan's instincts warn her he may strike again. She returns to her hometown to confront both Weston and Detective Gideon Bailey, a man from her past whom she loved and left behind. When a local woman dies in another fire, Joan and Gideon suspect Weston despite his solid alibi for that night. Ann, Gideon's sister and Joan's former college roommate, shares their doubts. As the investigation progresses, Joan and Gideon uncover a troubling shared history involving Joan, Elijah, and Ann. With more fires breaking out across Missoula, the town's secrets begin to surface.
