About this book

Carry Me Home presents a Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the civil rights movement's pivotal confrontation in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1963, known as "The Year of Birmingham," the movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr. challenged segregation through large-scale nonviolent demonstrations, during which child protesters confronted police dogs and fire hoses. The Ku Klux Klan responded with violence, bombing the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and killing four young black girls. Diane McWhorter, a member of a prominent Birmingham family, combines police and FBI records, archival documents, interviews with black activists and Klansmen, and personal recollections to construct a narrative account of the people and events that led to the dismantling of segregation. A new afterword includes the author's recent encounters with Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and examines Alabama's current anti-immigration laws, positioning the state as an ongoing site of civil rights significance.
