Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction that centres women's perspectives and moral dilemmas, not just battle scenes.
  • You're drawn to stories about ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances who find unexpected strength.
  • You appreciate faith-based narratives that grapple with real doubt and complexity rather than neat answers.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer lighter historical fiction without the emotional weight of war and loss.
  • You want fast-paced plots with lots of action. This is character-driven and contemplative.
  • You're looking for stories that don't explore religious faith as a central theme.

About this book

Chasing Shadows follows three women whose lives are transformed when Nazi forces invade the neutral Netherlands during World War II. Each woman faces difficult choices with life-or-death consequences. Lena is a wife and mother living on a farm in the countryside. Her faith has guided her life, but the Nazi occupation forces her to confront increasingly complex moral questions. Her daughter Ans has recently moved to Leiden, where she works and meets a young Dutch police officer. When Ans becomes involved in Resistance activities, her initial idealism confronts the genuine dangers of opposing the occupiers. Miriam is a young Jewish violinist who immigrated to Holland seeking safety. She finds love in her new country, but the Nazi invasion tests her and her family in unexpected ways. The invasion brings these three women's paths together in surprising and sometimes tragic ways. The novel explores how faith and love sustain people through one of history's darkest periods. Includes discussion questions for book clubs.
