Set in 1944 Chicago, this mystery follows twenty-year-old Aki Ito, who has just been released from Manzanar internment camp along with her parents. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans detained since Pearl Harbor, the Ito family is being resettled in Chicago, two thousand miles from their former life in California. Aki's older sister Rose was sent to Chicago months earlier and settled in the Japanese American neighborhood near Clark and Division streets. But before the family can reunite, Rose is killed by a subway train. Officials rule her death a suicide, but Aki, who deeply admired her sister, cannot accept this conclusion. Convinced there is more to the story, Aki sets out to uncover the truth about Rose's death. Inspired by historical events, the novel weaves together an atmospheric crime story with period details and personal narratives drawn from the author's thirty years of research and archival work in Japanese American history.
