Perfect for you if...

  • You work in economic policy or labour market research and need rigorous data on how COVID reshaped work.
  • You're curious whether remote work and digital adoption are here to stay or just temporary pandemic responses.
  • You advise businesses or governments on workforce strategy and want evidence-based insights on digitalisation trends.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven writing. This is technical analysis with charts, not a story.
  • You're looking for actionable business advice. This is descriptive research, not a playbook.
  • You want an optimistic take on technology. The data here shows clear winners and losers, with persistent inequality.

About this book

The pandemic accelerated digitalization in advanced economies, with less digitalized entities partially catching up. Higher digitalization levels provided substantial protection for productivity and hours worked during the crisis. However, whether pandemic-induced digitalization created lasting structural economic change remains unclear. Less digitalized sectors experienced stronger declines but subsequently rebounded more strongly. Workers in digital occupations faced less disruption from the crisis, yet labor demand composition does not show evidence of structural shift. In contrast, changes in labor supply appear more likely to be permanent, particularly driven by increased working from home arrangements.
