Educational Goods: Values, Evidence, and Decision-Making

Educational policy debates often focus on how to improve schools, but rarely address a fundamental question: what should society expect from education? What goals should decision-makers pursue? In Educational Goods, Harry Brighouse and three co-authors—two philosophers and two social scientists—examine this core question. They introduce a framework for discussing educational policy by defining "educational goods" as the knowledge, skills, and attitudes children develop for their own benefit and that of others, and "childhood goods" as the valuable experiences and freedoms that distinguish childhood as a distinct life phase.
