Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to the granular details of military campaigns that schoolbooks skip over. You enjoy narrative history that shows how small decisions ripple outward across empires. You appreciate accounts of soldiers far from home fighting battles that mattered more than anyone realised at the time.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a character-driven story with personal drama and emotional arcs. You prefer broad sweeping narratives over the tactical specifics of how armies manoeuvre and fight. You're looking for a quick read rather than a scholarly deep dive into a single campaign.

About this book

In 1798, a French expedition led by General Bonaparte sought to seize Egypt, consolidate French influence in the Mediterranean, and establish a route to India that could threaten the East India Company and weaken Great Britain. Bonaparte returned to France to seize power, but his army remained in Egypt, continuing to pose a threat to British interests. In 1801, a large British Army led by Sir Ralph Abercrombie landed in Egypt and defeated the French forces in a series of hard-fought battles. The campaign resulted in the capture of Malta en route, providing Britain with a Mediterranean base for the next century and a half. The victory also secured India and established the reputation of the British Army, which had not previously distinguished itself against Revolutionary France. British soldiers who served in Egypt in 1801 were awarded a unique badge featuring a Sphinx. This campaign had profound consequences for the Napoleonic wars that followed, though it remains little understood.
