Perfect for you if...

  • You want to understand how ordinary workers shaped America, not just presidents and generals.
  • You're curious about labour movements, unionisation, and why weekends exist, but find academic labour history dense or dry.
  • You appreciate visual storytelling and graphic journalism that makes historical research feel immediate and human.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven stories over thematic historical analysis.
  • You're looking for a deep dive into a single labour movement or time period rather than a broad survey.
  • You want a book that avoids politics or controversy around labour organising and workers' rights.

About this book

From the Folks Who Brought You the Weekend is an illustrated history of labor in the United States, newly updated. The book traces American working-class history from indentured servants and slaves in seventeenth-century Chesapeake through high-tech workers in contemporary Silicon Valley. It features illustrations by comics journalist Joe Sacco. The updated edition includes expanded analysis of labor's role in American life, covering sex workers, disability issues, labor's connection to the global justice movement and immigrants' rights movement, the 2005 AFL-CIO split and subsequent movement conflicts, and the emergence of worker centers and their union relationships. Two entirely new chapters address global developments such as offshoring and the 2016 election and unions' relationships to Trump.
