About this book

Gertrude Bell was a scholar and spy whose career spanned the height of the British Empire and led to the creation of Iraq. Born in 1868 into privilege, she rejected Victorian society to study history at Oxford and became an archaeologist, spy, Arabist, linguist, author, poet, photographer, and mountaineer. Bell traveled extensively but was drawn to the desert, where she journeyed with armed companions and servants. Her deep knowledge of the region made her vital to the Cairo Intelligence Office during World War I. She advised the Viceroy of India and, as an army major, traveled to the front lines in Mesopotamia. There she supported the creation of an autonomous Arab nation, promoted King Faisal's election to the throne, and helped establish Iraq's borders. Georgina Howell's biography presents Bell as a woman who transcended the constraints of her class and era, leaving a lasting legacy through her role in shaping the modern Middle East.
