On December 3, 1999, Lily Safra stood outside her Monte Carlo penthouse after a fire killed her fourth husband, reclusive billionaire Edmond Safra. An American nurse employed by the family was convicted of arson. Overnight, Lily became one of the world's wealthiest widows. The Brazilian-born Safra had experienced earlier tragedies. In 1969, her second husband, Brazilian multimillionaire Alfredo Monteverde, died from gunshots to the chest, ruled a suicide by Brazilian authorities. In 1989, her eldest son and four-year-old grandson died in a car accident. Despite her prominence in society columns for charity work and parties, Safra remained largely private. Gilded Lily presents Safra's story for the first time. Using archival sources, court documents, and interviews with childhood friends and former employees in South America, investigative journalist Isabel Vincent chronicles her rise from humble origins in Brazil to wealth in London, New York, and Monaco.
