Perfect for you if...

  • You love narrative history that reads like a thriller, with real stakes and genuine suspense about whether the hero survives.
  • You're fascinated by how pivotal moments in young lives shape world leaders, not just their headlines.
  • You appreciate when a historian weaves together multiple historical figures (Gandhi, Kipling, Kitchener) rather than telling a flat chronological tale.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a comprehensive biography of Churchill's entire life; this focuses tightly on his youth and the Boer War years.
  • You prefer straight analytical history over narrative storytelling with dramatic scenes and dialogue reconstruction.
  • You have strong views against British imperialism and don't want to spend 400 pages with a character embodying that worldview.

About this book

At age twenty-four, Winston Churchill arrived in South Africa in 1899 convinced of his destiny to become prime minister of England. He came to cover the brutal colonial war between the British and Boer rebels, hoping to advance his political career. Two weeks later, he was taken prisoner. Churchill executed a daring escape, traveling hundreds of miles through enemy territory alone with only cash, chocolate, and his wits. During his time in South Africa, he encountered historical figures including Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchener, and Mohandas Gandhi, with whom he would later share the world stage. Candice Millard's account examines how the lessons Churchill learned during the Boer War would significantly influence twentieth century history.
