Perfect for you if...

  • You're curious about economics but find most theory books tedious and want real stories from real countries.
  • You work in development, policy, or international business and need to understand why some Asian economies succeeded where others failed.
  • You're sceptical of Western narratives about Asia and want someone who's actually lived there to set the record straight.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a quick self-help playbook. This is deep research that demands your attention across 489 pages.
  • You're looking for investment tips or a prediction of which country will win next. Studwell looks backwards to explain the past, not forecast the future.
  • You prefer your economics theory-heavy and abstract rather than grounded in specific land reforms and factory floors.

About this book

Joe Studwell, a reporter with two decades of experience in Asia, examines the economies of nine countries—Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China—to explain why some have thrived while others have struggled. Studwell identifies three critical factors in economic success: land policy, manufacturing, and finance. Land reform has been essential to Asian development, mobilizing large workforces and generating capital for growth. Industrial development alone is insufficient for manufacturing; instead, countries require "export discipline," where governments compel companies to compete globally. In finance, effective regulation is necessary to foster and sustain growth. Through detailed analysis and examples—from a Philippine sugar baron's resistance to reform to growth at a Korean steel mill—Studwell challenges Western misconceptions about Asian economies and clarifies the actual drivers of regional economic outcomes.
