Perfect for you if...

  • You admire self-made entrepreneurs and want to understand how scrappy ambition and deal-making built actual wealth in America.
  • You're interested in Wall Street culture and corporate history from someone who lived it rather than just studied it.
  • You believe in the American Dream but want to hear from someone who actually lived it without inheriting money.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a balanced critique of capitalism. This is a passionate defence, not an examination of its shortcomings.
  • You want a business how-to manual. This is a memoir of one man's specific path, not a replicable blueprint.
  • You prefer narrative-driven storytelling over a businessman's personal philosophy.

About this book

Ken Langone recounts his rise from a poor Long Island background to become one of America's most successful businessmen. A co-founder of Home Depot, former director of the New York Stock Exchange, and major philanthropist who donated $200 million to NYU's Langone Health, Langone shares his unlikely path and controversial career in this memoir. The book chronicles his struggles to obtain an education, enter Wall Street, and earn an MBA while competing against privileged peers. Langone describes learning to evaluate business worth and applying street smarts to major deals. He also discusses his legal and public relations battle with former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer for the first time. Throughout, Langone argues that free enterprise enables opportunity for all. He presents the book as a defense of the American Dream and capitalism, asserting that anyone with ambition and work ethic can achieve success regardless of their starting point.
