About this book

Harriet Jacobs' memoir documents her life as a slave in North Carolina and her eventual escape to freedom. Published in 1861 under the pseudonym Linda Brent to protect her safety under the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, the narrative describes her childhood as relatively stable until her mother's death, when her mistress bequeathed her to a relative. Jacobs writes candidly about the sexual abuse, struggles for survival, and hypocrisy inherent in slavery, particularly as experienced by enslaved women. The book addresses women's efforts to practice motherhood while facing the constant threat of their children being sold away. Jacobs recounts her own attempts to escape and her path to freedom in the North, where she reunited with her children and became an abolitionist speaker and reformer. Written as an appeal to Northern white women, the memoir sought to expand their understanding of slavery as an institution and influence their views on it. Though initially overshadowed by the Civil War's outbreak, the work has since been recognized as an important slave narrative written from a female perspective.
