Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Arthurian legend but want the historical facts stripped of romantic fiction and medieval invention.
  • You enjoy detective work through primary sources, maps, and archaeological evidence to solve ancient mysteries.
  • You have a particular interest in Dark Age Britain, Welsh history, or how real figures become mythologised across centuries.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer the romantic, magical versions of Arthur with Merlin, Excalibur, and Avalon as mystical places rather than historical locations.
  • You want a novel or narrative retelling instead of scholarly analysis and archaeological evidence.
  • You're looking for a quick read. This is a substantial 442-page deep dive into genealogy, inscriptions, and geographical reconstruction.

About this book

This book represents over thirty years of research by Chris Barber, a King Arthur specialist. It examines connections throughout Dark Age Britain, particularly Wales and Cornwall, to reveal that King Arthur was a hereditary King of the ancient land of the Silures in South Wales. Barber distinguishes fact from fiction to identify the Celtic prince behind the Arthurian legend, obscured by time and later romantic embellishments. The book details his family background, 6th century inscribed stones bearing his name and those of his contemporaries, locations of his courts, and battle sites including Badon, Llongborth, and Camlann. It also identifies his enemies, locates the ancient Isle of Avalon, and reveals his final resting place.
