Perfect for you if...

  • You're sceptical of mainstream historical narratives taught in schools and want an alternative perspective backed by academic credentials.
  • You're interested in American political history and enjoy revisionist takes that challenge conventional wisdom.
  • You appreciate contrarian arguments and debate around what gets taught in classrooms, regardless of which side you ultimately agree with.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a balanced, multiple-perspective history book rather than a polemical argument from one ideological position.
  • You prefer primary sources and deep archival research over an essayist's reinterpretation of established events.
  • You find books written as explicit political counterarguments exhausting rather than engaging.

About this book

Wilfred Reilly, a college professor, examines historical narratives in American school curricula. While James W. Loewen's 1995 work Lies My Teacher Told Me addressed sanitized and omitted content in American history books, Reilly argues that leftist narratives have since come to dominate American academia and education. He challenges several widely accepted historical claims, including that the Red Scare caught no communists, that Native Americans were uniformly peaceful, that European colonialism was entirely negative, that the Southern Strategy turned the South Republican, and that the Vietnam War was unpopular and pointless. Reilly contends that communists were present in Hollywood, that some Native American tribes practiced cannibalism and slavery, and that American history was worse for all citizens than commonly understood. The book presents these arguments through detailed research and analysis of established historical events.
