A Velazquez painting stolen by the Nazis surfaces at a Boston pawnshop, triggering a series of murders. In April 1945, as the Nazis faced defeat, they transported looted European art treasures to the Altaussee salt mine in the Austrian Alps. During the chaos of the final days, a single truck carrying masterpieces disappeared into a mountain snowstorm, along with its driver and cargo. Decades later, ex-curator Ben Revere discovers the Velazquez among items in a seedy Boston pawnshop. The painting's emergence sets off a chain of killings as those aware of its existence are murdered one by one. Revere must travel to Europe's major cities to trace the history of the lost truck and its treasures before the decades-old cycle of hatred, greed, and revenge catches up with him.
