Macrolife: A Mobile Utopia is a novel about space habitats and their significance for human history. Set initially in 2021, the story follows the wealthy Bulero family. When an industrial accident triggers a corporate crisis that destabilizes the world, the family flees to a space colony. There, young Richard Bulero comes to understand that humanity's future depends on macrolife—mobile, self-reproducing space habitats. A thousand years later, these mobile communities have spread beyond the solar system and multiplied. John Bulero, a cloned descendant of the original Bulero clan, falls in love with a woman from a natural world and encounters the hardships of planetary life. When his mobile habitat returns to the solar system, a confrontation between three civilizations ensues. One hundred billion years into the future, macrolife has become as numerous as the stars but faces the universe's impending death. A transformed John Bulero, having regained his individuality, struggles to comprehend the collapse of the universe into a black hole. Drawing on possibilities of space settlements, projections of biology and cosmology, and fundamental human desires, the novel presents a visionary speculation on the long-term future of human and natural history.
