James Falkner examines the internal structure and operations of General John Churchill's army during the War of the Spanish Succession. While the Duke of Marlborough's Anglo-Dutch victories at Blenheim, Ramilles, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet against the armies of Louis XIV of France are well documented, less has been written about the soldiers, commanders, army organization, administration, logistics, engineering, weapons, and finance that enabled these successes. Falkner's account focuses on the composition and operation of Marlborough's army, analyzing how it functioned and how warfare was conducted in Europe during this period. The book draws on Falkner's extensive research into early 18th-century British military history.
