Marmee: A Novel

In 1861, Margaret March lives in Concord, Massachusetts, while her husband serves as an army chaplain during the Civil War. With her four daughters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—dependent on her, Margaret faces mounting financial strain as her husband sends less money each month. She carries a painful secret: a mistake made over a decade ago destroyed her family's fortune and deprived her daughters of educational opportunities they deserved. Despite her own struggles, Margaret is driven to contribute to the war effort, help the poor, and support abolition. She channels her anxieties into charity work, living by her motto "Hope and keep busy." This routine is disrupted when the War Department sends her a telegram summoning her to Washington, D.C., to her husband's bedside. During her absence, her daughter Beth becomes critically ill, forcing Margaret to confront whether her generosity toward others has come at the cost of her daughter's life.
