Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy cosy mysteries with actual stakes. Maxwell isn't just solving puzzles in a charming village. Someone is trying to kill him, and it gets personal when his neighbour is abducted.
  • You appreciate eccentric protagonists who feel like real people. Peter Maxwell quotes films, cycles everywhere on a bike named after Richard III's horse, and genuinely cares about his students. He's funny without being a caricature.
  • You've read the previous 22 Maxwell books or you're starting fresh. This is book 23 in a series, but it works as a standalone. The reviews suggest newcomers fall for Maxwell immediately.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want your mysteries cosy in tone and stakes. This blends humour with real danger. People die, attempts are made on Maxwell's life, and the twists build genuine tension alongside the wit.
  • You prefer lightweight, episodic mysteries. The arsonist closing in and the revelation about how history lessons are being weaponised create momentum that doesn't pause for charm.
  • You're looking for a first-person narrator. Maxwell is centre stage, but Trow writes from a distance that lets readers see him clearly. It's character-driven but not intimate in that way.

About this book

Peter Maxwell is a history teacher at Leighford High School, a small seaside town on the South Coast. Known as 'Mad Max' for his love of quoting films, Maxwell is an eccentric figure who cycles everywhere on his bike, White Surrey, and spends his time building a diorama of the Charge of the Light Brigade in his attic while discussing cases with his cat, Count Metternich. When a deadly explosion at Maxwell's history club meeting leaves a charred body behind, police suspect he was the intended target. A subsequent hit-and-run attempt confirms someone wants him dead. When his neighbour Mrs. B is abducted, Maxwell discovers a chilling truth: someone is using his history lessons as a call to violence. As an arsonist closes in on the next target, Maxwell must uncover why he is being targeted and stop a deadly campaign of vengeance before history repeats itself. This is the twenty-third book in the Schoolmaster Murder Mysteries series.
