About this book

Tatiana Proskouriakoff made significant contributions to Maya studies, particularly in deciphering Maya writing. She demonstrated that glyphs recorded the deeds of actual human beings rather than gods or priests—a discovery that enabled the study of Maya history. Maya History, prepared for publication by editor Rosemary Joyce, represents work Proskouriakoff was developing before her death in 1985. The book reconstructs the Classic Maya period (approximately A.D. 250-900) using glyphic records from stelae at multiple sites: Altar de Sacrificios, Copan, Dos Pilas, Naranjo, Piedras Negras, Quirigua, Tikal, and Yaxchilan. Proskouriakoff traces how governmental institutions spread from the central Peten, particularly from Tikal, to other city-states through conquest and intermarriage. The text is supplemented by thirteen line drawings of monuments and over three hundred original drawings of glyphs.
