Perfect for you if...

  • You're frustrated because you've hit a plateau in your career or learning and wonder if you're just not naturally gifted enough to go further.
  • You manage people or coach others and want concrete strategies to help them get unstuck rather than telling them to 'try harder'.
  • You catch yourself saying 'I'm not a maths person' or 'I'm not creative' and suspect those labels might be holding you back.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for quick motivational hype. This is research-backed and sometimes challenges the self-help narratives you've heard before.
  • You prefer narrative-driven memoirs. Dweck uses case studies but the book is fundamentally about psychology research, not personal storytelling.
  • You already know your learning style cold and don't care to reconsider your fundamental beliefs about ability and talent.

About this book

Carol S. Dweck, a Stanford University psychologist, presents research on how beliefs about abilities influence learning and life outcomes. After decades of study, she identified the concept of mindset as a key factor in success across school, work, sports, the arts, and other areas of human endeavor. Dweck distinguishes between two mindset types: those with a fixed mindset believe abilities are unchangeable and are less likely to flourish, while those with a growth mindset believe abilities can be developed. The book demonstrates how parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can apply this concept to foster accomplishment. This updated edition includes new material on false growth mindset and guides readers toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. Dweck also extends the mindset concept beyond individuals to the cultures of groups and organizations, showing how the right mindset can help motivate and transform the lives of those you lead, teach, and love.
