Perfect for you if...

  • You love horror that plays with the form itself. The meta-textual warning becomes part of the terror.
  • You're drawn to unreliable narrators who are genuinely dangerous. Jakerbok's charm makes his evil all the more seductive.
  • You appreciate Clive Barker's baroque style. This is him at his most inventive, mixing history, theology, and psychological horror.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want straightforward good-versus-evil storytelling. This blurs those lines deliberately and unsettlingly.
  • You prefer plot-driven narratives. This is a confession, a taunt, and a philosophical descent into darkness.
  • You're squeamish about demonic violence and childhood trauma. Barker doesn't soften what Jakerbok endured or inflicted.

About this book

Mister B. Gone is a supernatural thriller presented as a demon's memoir. The narrator, Jakerbok, is a minion of hell who warns readers to "Burn this book!"—a command that paradoxically unleashes the evil he has hidden within its pages. Jakerbok recounts his life spanning centuries, describing his childhood traumas at the hands of his demon parents and his rise from minor to major demon status. He reveals his plan to cast the world into darkness by invading human minds and hearts through the invention of the printing press. The manuscript was printed by Johannes Gutenberg in 1438 but was buried by one of Gutenberg's apprentices and lost for nearly six hundred years. Through Jakerbok's direct narrative, the novel explores the battle between good and evil, offering an intimate and revelatory journey into these opposing forces. The work combines historical fantasy with horror elements, presenting itself as a dangerous text that should not be read.
