Perfect for you if...

  • You want the unfiltered story of how six Brits invented a completely new form of comedy that changed television forever.
  • You're fascinated by creative process: how sketches were written, why films sparked controversy, where the tension and collaborations came from.
  • You grew up on Python or comedy history and want to hear directly from Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Idle, Jones, and Palin about what they were actually thinking.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward narrative history; this is interview-based and jumps between voices and timelines.
  • You're looking for a critical analysis of comedy theory rather than behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes.
  • You haven't watched Python and don't have the context to enjoy hearing the creators discuss their own work.

About this book

This revised and updated edition marks the 50th anniversary of Monty Python's BBC debut. It includes a foreword by John Oliver. Monty Python's Flying Circus aired on the BBC from 1969 to 1974, introducing a new form of surrealistic, stream-of-consciousness comedy that challenged traditional boundaries of format, style, and content. The group—Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin—blended satire with slapstick humor. Their work spread internationally and influenced modern popular culture, affecting shows like Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and Austin Powers. David Morgan's oral history collects interviews with the founding members, actors, producers, and collaborators. It covers the group's legendary sketches and films, including Monty Python's Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which inspired the Broadway musical Spamalot), and The Meaning of Life. The edition includes four new chapters on the group's work since the first edition was published twenty years ago, along with a new foreword and updated resources. The book explores the Pythons' creative process, including their friendships and conflicts.
